Recommended Software
The following programs are the ones we use internally, and the ones we recommend to clients and friends. They are easy to use, free and effective, and most of them are open-source and developed by not-for-profit organizations, providing additional security to users.
These programs will provide security, stability and functionality to your computer.
Internet (Web Browsing and Mail)
- Mozilla Firefox. Ideal substitute for Internet Explorer. Web browser easily downloadable and installable, it's very safe, easy to use, powerful and customizable.
- Mozilla Thunderbird. Ideal substitute for Outlook. Mail client easily downloadable and installable, it's very safe, easy to use, powerful and customizable.
By not being tied to Windows, they keep your computer stable and protected from virus and other Internet threats. They are updated frequently and automatically. They are successors to Netscape.
Instant Messaging, Voice and Video
- Google Talk. Ideal due to its integration with Google Mail (Gmail) and because of the small impact it has on your computer's performance. It works very well even with slow connections. It doesn't support video, yet.
- Skype. Excellent audio y video, especially if you have a powerful computer. Much better than MSN/Live Messenger for video.
Images, Audio and Video
- Irfanview. A small and fast image viewing program. Use the keyboard (Enter, Escape, Page Up, Page Down, Right Arrow, Left Arrow) to switch images in full-screen mode and modify them with ease to send them by e-mail.
- Winamp Lite. Ideal if all you want is to listen to music without affecting the performance of your computer.
- Winamp Full. The most mature version of the famous music player, that has become a robust player for all kinds of media.
Documents
- Foxit Reader. PDF viewer, similar to the Adobe Acrobat Reader, but much smaller and incredibly fast. The best choice for everyday use.
- PDF Creator. Transforms your documents or spreadsheets (and even Web pages) to the PDF format, ensuring they will be received exactly as you see them, disallowing modifications.
- Free PDF to Word Doc Converter. Converts all or some of the pages of a PDF file to a Word document to allow modifications, preserving the original layout (with text, images and shapes).
Antivirus and Security
- AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. Good level of protection, updated daily, and its impact on the performance of your computer is minimum. Free for private, non-commercial use.
